Ventilate the area without using flames. If the smell could be natural gas, leave the building and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Human noses are not reliable instruments for distinguishing every gas or odor source.
Dry traps in rarely used fixtures
Every sink, tub, shower, and floor drain uses trapped water to block sewer gas. In a guest bath or floor drain that sits unused, the water can evaporate and open a direct odor path.
Run water into the fixture and observe whether the odor fades. If the trap dries repeatedly, leakage, siphoning, or air movement may be involved; simply refilling it is then a temporary clue rather than the full fix.
A failed toilet seal
A toilet can flush normally while the seal at its base allows odor to escape. Rocking, staining, dampness, or odor strongest around the base are useful signs.
Do not caulk over a suspected leak and call it repaired. The toilet should be removed, the flange and floor inspected, movement corrected, and the correct seal installed before the base is finished.
Loose cleanouts and open drain connections
A missing cleanout plug, uncapped drain, abandoned fixture connection, or loose trap can release odor. Basements, garages, utility rooms, and remodel areas are common places to inspect.

A sewer camera evaluates the inside of accessible lines; controlled testing can help locate branch leaks. Odor alone does not reveal whether the failure is in a trap, vent, branch, or main.
Active backup or sanitation hazard
Wastewater in a tub, shower, toilet, or floor drain is more than an odor problem. Stop using plumbing throughout the property, keep people and pets away, and request urgent service.
Do not use chemicals in a backed-up system. They can remain in standing wastewater and expose whoever opens the line later.
Leave a strong or symptom-producing odor area instead of testing your tolerance

If the smell is overwhelming, people develop eye or throat irritation, headache, nausea, dizziness, or breathing difficulty, or the source appears to be a confined crawlspace, pit, or utility room, move everyone to fresh air and contact emergency or public-safety resources as appropriate.
Do not enter a manhole, sewage pit, ejector basin, crawlspace, or other confined area to follow the smell. Do not light a match, smoke, or use a flame to test airflow. If natural gas remains possible, follow utility emergency instructions from outside. Plumbing diagnosis begins only after the area can be approached safely.
A practical room-by-room check
Note where the smell is strongest, when it appears, and which fixtures were recently used. Refill unused traps, check toilet movement, inspect accessible cleanouts, and look for active backup without disassembling unknown piping.
Persistent odor deserves professional diagnosis because ongoing exposure and hidden wastewater can affect indoor conditions and building materials.

After the correction, recreate the conditions that used to trigger the smell when the plumber says it is safe: run the related fixture, operate the exhaust fan, or allow another connected fixture to drain. The odor may take time to clear from fabrics and cabinets, but the open plumbing path should be resolved. Keep a note of the repaired seal, trap, vent, or pipe location. If odor returns, that history lets the next inspection distinguish a failed repair from a separate dry trap or drainage problem elsewhere in the home.
